Sibling Roulette

Each of us is more or less thrown into the mix, into this thing we call life. And whether one sees it as a roll of the dice, a crapshoot, or just the way the cookie crumbles, there it is. Probably best not to think about it too hard.

In the grand scheme of things, we're kids for such a short time, yet its importance cannot be overstated.  The years spanning childhood are nothing short of an obstacle course of the good, the bad, and the ugly for sure. And while our siblings may have seemed to be part of said obstacle course at times, looking back, they were something else altogether. They were the foundation of something enduring and unspoken. They were our allies.

There’s no one else in the world other than your siblings who know what it’s like to have been raised the way you were. We understand each other to the core. Even the weird stuff, because when it comes down to it, we share much of that weird stuff. We know the misery of drinking mom’s runny soft-boiled eggs from a cup when we were little, the indoctrination as to what would surely send us to hell as teens, and being schooled regarding matters of great importance such as the impending collapse of the monetary system by dad.

To the world, we grow old, but to siblings, we remain timeless.  We know each other as we always were. We know each other’s hearts. We share private family jokes, secrets, joys, and pain. We remember it all. We live outside the touch of time.

Being a sibling means being part of something wonderful. It means you will love and be loved for the rest of your life, no matter what. Life is hectic, and sometimes we go quite a spell without even seeing each other, but we always pick right back up where we left off. Siblings are unconditional lifelong friends by design.

So if life is nothing more than a crapshoot, so be it, I can accept that.  It does seem however, that Lady Luck was on our side.  For as the wheel spun, it gave me my siblings—a jackpot I’ll always treasure.
