American Tune

Few songs become truly classic in their ability to be relevant, and even fewer continue to remain so over time.  Paul Simon's "American Tune" does that and more.

"American Tune" is among my favorites.  I was fourteen when it was first released and I recall its calming nature.  More than half a century later, it still resonates.  What a treasure.  Perhaps it can best be summed up in its enduring message that tomorrow is another day and no matter how weary we become, life moves on.  And most significantly, the gentle reminder that we're all Americans.

Paul Simon found a way to express his political feelings without becoming political.  A true gift, and wisdom personified.  Devoid of anger, bitterness, or blame, it offends no one.  The simple words, alongside a melody touched with just a hint of melancholy perfects the message.  It conveys a sentiment that it could have been written for each of us specifically, because in reality, it was.

"American Tune" just might be the one-size-fits-all song for the ages.  It can be inserted into any decade, any situation, and to any group of people, and in so doing, is truly an "American Treasure".
